Visit The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, Uwec (zoo)

Commonly known as the "Entebbe Zoo", UWEC has been a sanctuary for wild animals rescued from various parts of Uganda since 1952. It has transitioned from a mere animal exhibition for visitors to a key player in conservation efforts. UWEC is tasked with breeding species on the brink of extinction, thus establishing a healthy animal population as a safeguard for endangered species. The zoo welcomes visitors year-round, providing a unique opportunity for children to observe chimpanzees, which are not accessible in the wild. While tigers are not native to Africa, a visit to UWEC allows you to see them. Other wildlife on the premises includes lions, leopards, rhinos, giraffes, and more. Bird enthusiasts can also spot the endangered shoebill, as well as snakes like the African python. UWEC is an excellent destination for those with limited time in Uganda who may not be able to visit national parks where these animals reside in their natural habitat.
